During a press conference on Wednesday, Senator Ted Cruz was asked by a reporter to put on a mask for the comfort of everyone in the room. Since Cruz has never cared about anyone’s comfort but his own, he refused and then lied about the guidelines for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The exchange was broadcast on C-SPAN, according to Business Insider, and shared in multiple places on Twitter, including Cruz’s own account. He quote-tweeted the clip by saying, “Lefty reporters have lost their minds. #commonsense.”

The press conference was Cruz and a number of other GOP Senators discussing a trip they’re making soon to the border of Mexico. Everyone except Cruz appears to be masked. In the clip, a reporter asks, “Would you mind putting a mask on for us?”
“Yeah, when I’m talking to the TV camera I’m not going to wear a mask, and all of us have been immunized,” Cruz said, referring to the other lawmakers.
“It would make us feel better,” the reporter replies.
“You’re welcome to step away if you like,” Cruz says sarcastically. “The whole point of a vaccine—CDC guidance is what we’re following.”
Um, what part? The CDC guidelines still recommend that people should wear masks in public settings around other people.

They say:, “After you’ve been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you should keep taking precautions in public places like wearing a mask, staying 6 feet apart from others, and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces until we know more.”
The vaccine is just one step in defeating coronavirus, and the U.S. is not at herd immunity. While Ted Cruz himself might not pose an actual threat to the people gathered around him during a press conference, his smug refusal to mask up and dispersing misinformation is pretty bad. The last thing we need is more Ted Cruz stans taking the man’s public health advice.
On the other hand, not a lot of people seem to like him.
