BuzzFeed News reports that the footage was taken in Diamond Bar, an area that is majority Asian-American and Pacific-Islander. The attack is being investigated by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department as a hate crime.

In the video, protestors crossing the streets carrying signs in support of the AAPI community are cut off by a dark car driving into the crowd, then making a U-turn back through them while screaming “f-ck China.”

Luckily, no one was injured. Another video taken by Michael Ade and posted on Instagram shows the man who allegedly drove through the crowd getting back into his car down the road, waving boldly at the camera person:

“During an AAPI rally in Diamond Bar, California this racist is seen driving through demonstrators and screaming racial motivated comments at them,” they wrote in the caption. “As I said earlier this week collectively we have to move past lip service and actually take action against these racists. Even if it’s one person at a time…”

County Supervisor Janice Hahn tweets about her disgust for the racist attack. Hahn was at the rally, but apparently left before this happened.

The rally was in response to the murder of eight people, six of them Asian women in several spas in Atlanta, Georgia. The shootings were just one extreme act of violence after a year of rising attacks against Asian communities across the U.S.

These attacks have been largely attributed to Donald Trump and his administration’s rhetoric about the coronavirus, but as many activists have pointed out, there is a long history of anti-Asian discrimination in America that needs to be reckoned with.
