Conservatives Blame AOC For Conditions Her Grandma Is Living In, Troll Her With GoFundMe

In what is either a new low for conservatives but probably just a new medium if we’re honest, far-right figures like “theocratic fascist” Matt Walsh have taken Rep. Alexandria’s Ocasio-Cortez’s objections to the squalid conditions her grandma is living in and turned it against her. The congresswoman recently posted photos of her grandmother’s home in Puerto Rico, having finally been able to visit her after over a year of pandemic restrictions, to criticize the lack of support from the U.S. government after the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

Ignoring her point entirely, conservatives responded by pointing the finger at AOC, claiming that she should have been able to send her grandma enough money to fix her entire home, with Walsh falsely claiming that the representative lives “in luxury.”

“Shameful that you live in luxury while allowing your own grandmother to suffer in these squalid conditions,” Walsh wrote in a comment.

AOC responded by pointing out Walsh’s ignorance on immigrant families as well as stressing that she is concerned for all the people of Puerto Rico rather than “only caring for mine.” She posted the photos of her grandmother’s home not to gain sympathy or fundraise, but to point out that much of the funding allocated to rebuild the U.S. territory never arrived in part because Donald Trump blocked it.

Worse than accusing AOC of neglecting her own grandma is their cynical trolling in the form of a GoFundMe campaign ostensibly to help the woman they are calling “Abuela Cortez.” Before you think there might be any chance this is sincere, check the comment left by Candace Owens on Walsh’s tweet.

“Surely she will answer,” said Owens. “I’m sure she actually wants to help her grandmother and wasn’t just using her home to score a political point against Trump.”

If that’s not enough, the text of the GoFundMe description is even worse.

“One cannot be certain of the cost to repair grandma’s house, but surely most of the work could be completed for the price of AOC’s shiny Tesla Model 3,” it reads. “As AOC pointed out to us, we ‘don’t even have a concept for the role that [incredibly successful children of two American citizens…] play in their families,’ but clearly caring for their own grandparent isn’t part of it.”

This gross attempt to paint AOC’s attempt to raise awareness about how much help Puerto Rico still needs as a political ploy was preemptively debunked by the congresswoman’s own thread on the issue which stresses that this was not just Trump’s doing.

“I want to be clear – while Trump admin had a major role, it wasn’t just them,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “La Junta, local policies, etc were all on the same page: policies that pushed out local families.”

It’s perhaps understandable why Republicans like Walsh and Owens would assume AOC’s efforts to help the people of Puerto Rico is nothing more than a scam for money and votes. After all, that’s the only reason their party ever pretends to care about the little people.

Though the fundraiser has already surpassed its goal of what seems like a very average price for a car, AOC has not yet responded to this gross misuse of the fundraising platform and people who are not fans of theocratic fascism or ignoring the actual plights of millions of Puerto Ricans are not happy with the fake effort. More generous AOC supporters are instead reminding Walsh that she is never going to have sexual relations with him no matter how much he begs.
