Madison Cawthorn Praises Viet Cong In Pro-Second Amendment Argument

Madison Cawthorn is back in the news again after citing the Viet Cong as proof that American citizens need assault rifles in case they ever need to rise up against the United States government.

The freshman representative appeared on Newsmax Wednesday to discuss the legality and necessity of assault rifles, something that has long been a point of contention between those calling for the government to do literally anything about mass shootings and those who believe the right to own guns trumps everyone else’s right to not die in a mass shooting.

“The second amendment is so that if a tyrannical government ever wants to rise up, we can stop them,” Cawthorn said. “And if anybody ever wants to say, ‘Oh, well, you know what, citizens with a few small arms fire would never be able to stop the federal government,’ I absolutely disagree. Ask the Viet Cong how they handled the Marines and the Army in Vietnam.”

There’s a lot to unpack there, starting with the part where the people obsessed with the second amendment have a lot of overlap with the ones who supported overthrowing a legitimate election and installing a tyrannical government just months ago.

But the major focus was on Cawthorn’s comments about the Viet Cong.

And of course, his point doesn’t really even hold up to scrutiny.

It might not be a bad idea to have leaders of the Republican party actually spell out exactly how they are the party of patriots when they consistently show disdain for most Americans and their praise seems to be saved for…well, Vladimir Putin and the Viet Cong. Anyone?
