Casey Garcia is a 30-year-old mom. And last week, she was arrested for posing as her 13-year-old daughter after gaining entrance to her child’s Texas middle school.

Why would an adult pretend to be a teenager and spend the day at her daughter’s school? Garcia says it was part of an experiment on her part—to test security and find out how easy it would be for someone to infiltrate Garcia-Enriquez Middle School.

“We need better security at our schools,” explains Garcia. “This is what I tried to prove. I didn’t do this to get views. I didn’t do this to get likes. I didn’t do this so people could be mad at me and I can never walk around El Paso again.”
Garcia made several social media posts during the day, including a video on YouTube called “Going to school as my 13yr old daughter (Middle School edition).”
Garcia explains that she used her daughter’s ID to get into the school, but no one seemed to catch on to her deception until the end of the day when a teacher asked her to stay after class.
“She looked at me and she (said), ‘You’re not Julie,’” Garcia said.
“No, I’m not,” Garcia replied. “I took off my mask, I took off my glasses, and I said, ‘No, I’m not Julie. I’m Julie’s mom.’”
“The teachers were so preoccupied about the students who were online that they weren’t paying attention to the students who were there physically. I think the deal breaker for me was actually walking in and posing as a seventh grader. I mean, I’m no spring chicken, but it wasn’t hard,” Garcia added.

Once Garcia was discovered to be a parent and not a student, the El Paso County Sheriff’s office said deputies were notified about Garcia trespassing. She was charged with criminal trespass and tampering with government records.
“While there was a breach in security by an individual associated as a parent with the school,” San Elizario Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Mesa-Chavez said to KTSM News, “We want to assure you that our security measures are being reviewed and evaluated.”
