June is Pride Month, which means there are a lot of rainbow flags hanging from poles, windows, and apparently, the shoulders of LGBTQ+ youth in schools across America. That seems to be the trend according to this deranged post on r/InsanePeopleFacebook posted by u/Reign-exe. The post features a screenshot of a mom’s Facebook post featuring an image of her son walking to school. Draped around his shoulders is a ‘Thin Blue Line’ flag, otherwise known as a ‘Blue Lives Matter’ flag.

“My son was telling me a lot of his classmates are wearing pride flags as capes at school,” she wrote. “He decided to join and wear a flag cape for something he supports and feels strongly about. Proud Mama moment,” alongside a red heart emoji.

Comparing the flag supporting police officers—one that has in recent years been co-opted by white supremacists—to a Pride flag is both offensive and absurd. Someone’s sexual or gender identity is something that is deeply a part of them and their lived experience. This kid, or his mom, are just cop superfans. Could he grow out of it someday? With a mom like this, it seems unlikely, but maybe higher education will expose him to wider ideas. We hope.
Commenters did not take it easy on the teen, or his mother for sending him to school with that cape around his shoulders.
“Think about it,” wrote Sirnando138. “You’re a teenager wearing a cape to school. Your mom is posting how proud she is of it. And you think you’re a badass?”
Others made the obvious point that the mom’s comparison makes no sense, like ChargingWirelessly, who wrote, “It must’ve been so hard for all those kids to build up the courage to come out as cops to their parents and risk being kicked out of their homes.”
“Imma be honest,” PapuJohn responded. “If my kids ever start saying weird conservative sh—t or ‘come out’ as a fervent thin-blue-liner, I will probably kick them the f—k out and make them test their love of “free markets” and see how good the cops treat em when they’re homeless.”
A lot of people seemed to think they were looking at a future cop.
“He’s going to barely graduate, do a 3-month police course, and sign with the sheriff’s department,” Showme16 suggested. “After a year of beating up county inmates over marijuana charges he’ll get his very own patrol car assignment. Then the real badass will come out to play with no oversight.”

I’d really love to hear from this kid’s classmates and see what happened when he walked through the door of that school. Maybe they’ll have the sense to do a little constitutionally protected flag burning. Happy Pride!
