People Defend Queer Black Designer’s Colorful Target Line After White TikTokers Mock It

A white TikToker and her friend are facing backlash after ridiculing a line of dresses at Target created by a queer Black man.

Katie Boggs (@katieboggs_) wrote on her TikTok page that it’s “absolutely preposterous that these are real,” referring to a number of dresses designed by Christopher John Rogers. In the related video, Boggs and a friend modeled the variety of colorful pieces in a Target dressing room, standing awkwardly and seemingly trying to prove their claims that the dresses are simply “hideous.”

As the video racked up millions of views, Boggs received a number of comments from people who agreed with her that the dresses just weren’t something they could see themselves being into.

But others argued that the attempts to ridicule the clothing line were deeply misguided.

“These are actually pretty dresses,” @galliavant countered. “They just need to be styled by someone with a sense of style…”

“The bright colors are ideal on warmer/deeper skin tones,” another user pointed out.

Others were even more straight to the point with their backlash.

“These dresses are gorgeous and from a very talented designer. I’ll be wearing all of them- change your posture and take a risk!” @kfax5 wrote.

“Def not gonna take advice from two yt girls who’s peak of fashion is oversized tees and shorts bye,” reads the top comment on the post.

And as designer Marcelo Gaia pointed out in his own TikTok response specifically to Boggs’ video, just because someone doesn’t think an item of clothing works well for them doesn’t mean it won’t look fantastic on someone else. In this case, the items specifically seem to be working out well for “women of color, or women who just love color, or women of a particular body shape.”

Boggs and her friend aren’t the first ones to mock Rogers’ dresses on TikTok, but the attempts at slamming the clothing line largely seem to have backfired, as the attention drawn to them has prompted a number of videos showing off ways to style the dresses, defending them, or simply showing off the haul.
