In a way, co-ops are the HOAs of urban environments, meaning they usually suck and there’s almost always some ding-dong who thinks every little thing their neighbors get up to is their business. Writer Ashley Woodfolk got a taste of the worst kind of co-op board member where she lives and took revenge into her own hands. In Woodfolk’s hands, revenge is gracious and ironic.

First, she shared on Twitter, “GOOD EVENING TO EVERYONE EXCEPT the woman at my co-op who complained to the board about me and my toddler using sidewalk chalk in the courtyard. So I wrote her a little letter. In sidewalk chalk. In the courtyard.”

She shared a photo of the massive letter across the ground in the co-op’s courtyard, too, for proof:

She also shared the message she left, which reads:

This will be my last time using sidewalk chalk in the courtyard since it seems to be such a problem for you (and only for you). I’m sorry harmless fun that brought my toddler joy (and has actually helped him learn all of his letters and most of his numbers—his favorites are E and 8) cause you so much distress that you had to complain to the board and waste everyone’s time when our building has much bigger real problems.

I think you’re aware that we’re in a pandemic and while I’d love to take my kid to museums and the movies I don’t feel safe doing that, and sometimes even local parks are more crowded than I’m comfortable with. The courtyard was a safe space but now there are limits on that too. There are only a few weeks of nice weather left, and sincerely hope you enjoy the use of the sidewalk-chalk free courtyard for the remainder of the fall.

And I hope that every time it rains, rain that would have washed away any colorful ABCs I wrote on the ground, you think of me.

All my love,

Ashley

We don’t know if the Co-op Karen got the message, but it might take a while before it fades away and every person in the building is bound to see it. And now it’s gone viral on Twitter because people can’t believe how petty this chalk-hating lady is:

Woodfolk has said she doesn’t blame her co-op’s board for what happened it was just a sucky situation:

See? Class all the way.
