Cooking show host turned brand ambassador Rachael Ray has not lived a career without controversy. Ray’s claim to fame is that she makes simple tasty recipes that anyone can do and another part of that fame is churning out content. Ray is now on TikTok, so that’s a whole new platform she needs content for. The issue is that some recipes aren’t supposed to be simple, or if they are, you should know what you’re doing.

In her new recipe for refried beans, Rachael Ray produced something that had viewers screaming in absolute horror. While many of the ingredients in the recipe are ones that go in refried beans—onions, a single jalapeño, garlic, cumin—there’s also a lot of stuff that doesn’t seem to belong in it, like squirting hot sauce directly in the beans and a wholllllle bunch of water. And they still look like they’re pretty flavorless, watery, and finally, pretty burnt.

The recipe was so reviled on TikTok it made its way to Twitter where it got worked over again.

Refried beans are one of the great gifts of the culinary world and not that hard to make if you know what you’re doing. We won’t say Rachael Ray doesn’t know what she’s doing, but maybe watch a few recipe videos before settling on this one.
