The Late Show host Stephen Colbert announced guest Christopher Krebs as “the latest person to be fired by the president via tweet,” which is actually a whole genre of former government agent. Krebs is the former Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, a lifetime Republican who was basically fired for calling this year’s election “the most secure in American history.”
You can imagine how Donald Trump felt about that. He has been spending the last month refusing to concede and attempting to drum up evidence of voter fraud. This past week, he gave a 46 minute speech about all the ways the Democrats supposedly rigged the election, so Krebs helped Colbert parse through some of these accusation.
Krebs has apparently been getting death threats for taking a stand. Before they got into the fun stuff, he pointed out that election workers are getting death threats, too.
“We should celebrate the people who make our elections possible,” he said. “Don’t pour fuel on the fire. They are the real heroes here.”
They then went through the list of Trump’s accusation, starting with glitches in the Dominion software that supposedly switched Trump votes to Joe Biden. Krebs explains it was a hiccup that was immediately detected and addressed, and then backed up with verified paper ballots.
Trump’s been claiming that tabulations for votes were taking place in another country, for some reason.
“I don’t even understand this one,” said Krebs, before adding, “All votes are counted in the US. I don’t even understand where that comes from,.
In Nevada, Trump has been saying a vote is counted even if someone signs their name as Santa Claus.
Krebs, responds, “It depends – whether your name is Saint Nicholas. Then of course it works. Even if they check signatures.”
So he admits it!
Then, in Arizona, he also admits that ballots were stolen.
“This one is even true,” he explained. “There were ballot papers that had not yet been filled out. The case is now being investigated. The voters concerned were informed and could still vote in time.”
Finally, they addressed Trump’s claims of “massive dumps,” which seemed to make Krebs a little uncomfortable because of the scatological double meaning. Basically, Biden suddenly got a big bunch of votes at once because they were coming from a place where people really hate Donald Trump—and area that votes blue.
Will this interview help educate the conspiracy theorists and death threat senders in America? Krebs believes that Trump’s lies will have a “chilling effect” on people’s belief in democracy, and says we should be investing in paper ballots, modernizing election systems, and a comprehensive return to Civics education K-12.
How about ranked voting as long as we’re dreaming?
