Radio show host Adam Garrie has been getting a lot of attention on Twitter for his strange stance against a UK Government Treasury’s post about a change in their policy.

Starting January 1st, 2021, the luxury tax on tampons have been abolished. That’s great news! Anyone who menstruates knows that using sanitary products aren’t a luxury, they’re a necessity, and high prices just put them out of reach of the people who need them.

Garrie generally appears to be on board with the change. Instead of leaving his tweet on the subject at “good policy” he decided to add something about how the image the treasury used for its announcement was “obscene.”

He seems to be talking about that very neutral drawing of an unused tampon:

What is he seeing that I’m not seeing? Writer Kate Walton decided to risk asking what he could possibly be talking about.

“You do see how bizarre it is to call a tampon an obscene item, right?” she asked him.

“The image in question is,” he answered, happy to explain. “There is an implication of bodily fluids and the particular curvature of the specific image is overly suggestive.”

“Curvature? Genuinely asking: what curvature?” Walton persisted.

He said, “This part,” then shared the image again with a circle drawn around the tampon’s illustrated string. A squiggly line.

In another tweet, Garrie explicated further, “Asymmetrical images/ curvature in drawing, especially in the context of a bodily function which occurs below the belt, tends to conjure thoughts of mischief. This is unhelpful.”

Well, he’s right about that last part.

Not a lot of people seem to understand what Garrie is saying. I don’t think he cares, because his tweet is still up and getting ratioed. Maybe it’s fun to have a “controversy” that is baffling instead of straight upsetting.

The most fun part is all the edits people have made to the original image to try and help with Garrie’s objections:

Hope that helps, sir. Thank you for supporting the end of the tampon tax.
