The state of New York has finally succeeded in suspending the law license of former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, citing his pushing of falsehoods about the 2020 election. The decision was made by a state appellate court after a disciplinary panel determined that Giuliani posed an “immediate threat” to the public interest by making false statements in court claiming that election fraud was responsible for Joe Biden’s win.

“We conclude that there is uncontroverted evidence that respondent communicated demonstrably false and misleading statements to courts, lawmakers and the public at large in his capacity as lawyer for former President Donald J. Trump and the Trump campaign in connection with Trump’s failed effort at re-election in 2020,” the court wrote in their decision.

Giuliani will be able to fight this suspension in the disciplinary proceedings to follow, but according to the New York Times, due to the severity and immediacy of the threat he poses to the public, it’s likely that “permanent sanctions” will be applied by the time this is over. The court argued that the now-former lawyer’s actions damaged public faith in the U.S. election system, which threatens the very foundations of our democracy.

“The hallmark of our democracy is predicated on free and fair elections. False statements intended to foment a loss of confidence in our elections and resulting loss of confidence in government generally damage the proper functioning of a free society.”

His own lawyers, of course, disagree with the suspension.

“This is unprecedented as we believe that our client does not pose a present danger to the public interest,” they said in response to the news. “We believe that once the issues are fully explored at a hearing, Mr. Giuliani will be reinstated as a valued member of the legal profession that he has served so well in his many capacities for so many years.”

Before fighting this suspension, however, Giuliani and his lawyers have to hop over to D.C. today in order to defend him from defamation charges brought against him and others by Dominion Voting Systems, according to CNN courtroom reporter Katelyn Polantz.

He is also currently under investigation for potentially breaking lobbying laws in his dealings with Ukraine in 2019 as Donald Trump sought to dig up dirt on his likely 2020 opponent. This led to FBI agents raiding his apartment and office in New York back in April, seizing his laptops and other devices in the process.

Clearly, Giuliani has enough on his plate without having every critic on Twitter making fun of him for losing his law license, but what can you do?
