The incident, posted to the r/Minneapolis Reddit subreddit documenting life in the Twin Cities, showed a man in a pickup truck driving to the edge of George Floyd Square. The site, located at Chicago Avenue and 38th Street, is dubbed an “ongoing occupation protest and memorial site” according to Wikipedia. It’s at this intersection where Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin killed Floyd nearly a year ago; Chauvin was convicted of Floyd’s murder in a highly-publicized trial last month.

The video is headlined, “This man was recorded at 39th and Chicago last night,” and shows a man driving up to the memorial site. He walks up to it and begins to knock over signs and throw objects on the periphery of the memorial.

Then, he goes to his truck to get an axe, and that’s where it gets really dramatic.

The man goes to a brightly painted wooden house in the memorial and starts going to town with the ax, breaking windows and chopping at the exterior of the house. He works his way around the house, haphazardly chopping at it and tearing pieces of the wall off, and then sees something inside the house and says, “Whoa!”

He then removes two propane tanks and places them at the front of the house, as if he’s looking to take them back to his truck, and then goes back into the house to do a little more destruction.

A person can be heard in the video yelling, “Hey, what the f—k are you doing?” and “Get the f—k out of here!”

The man trudges back to his truck empty-handed, inexplicably leaving his ax and the propane tanks behind.

Reddit commenters had plenty to say about the incident, with one noting, “This is like the definition of impotent rage,” and another concurring, “What a little toddler temper tantrum that was.”

A few people speculated about the man just happening to have an ax with him in the truck, wondering if he was an off-duty firefighter, and others shouted out various Minneapolis-St. Paul suburbs and exurbs they speculated he might be from.

As the Daily Dot noted, several Redditors thought it was a police officer acting out.

“I bet he is a cop,” one user guessed.

“Yep, that’s why he took his time,” another surmised. “Knew nobody was coming because he forewarned them what he was going to do.”
