A New York woman says she was simply trying to get some pizza for herself and her kids as she had done many times before when a random white lady began hurling racial slurs before grabbing a container of red pepper flakes and hurling them at her face and at her five-month-old baby. Thankfully, no one was harmed, and none of the loose flakes got in the child’s eyes or nose, but the Black mother had to explain the incident to her four-year-old son who witnessed what is being investigated as a potential hate crime.

“I spoke to my children and I let them know that we’re humankind,” said the mom, who did not want to be identified publicly, to NBC New York. “We’re going to stand together. We’re going to continue to eat together and New York stand up.”

According to the mother, the family was leaving the pizza shop after enjoying their meal peacefully when the white woman hit them with an anti-Black slur and told them to go back to “their country.” She then grabbed a container of pepper flakes and “shook pepper at the victim,” who was holding the five-month-old in her arms at the time.
“We were assaulted with racial slurs and we were physically assaulted,” she said.
A witness attempted to record the attack but was only able to capture the aftermath, including the alleged perpetrator’s face. People can be heard accusing her of throwing things and telling the store employees to call the police.
“So this Karen going throw something at this girl,” says the person filming “For what? For what? It’s so sad.”
“You murdered all my f—ing people you weird kid,” says the white woman as she grabs her cart and starts to leave. She turns back for a second to say that somebody should “call the cops on her,” though it’s not clear exactly who she’s referring to.
Meanwhile, the mother can be heard explaining that the woman “she threw this pepper in my face, my baby, and my arms.”
As of Thursday, the attacker was still at large and New York police are actively searching for her. Employees at the pizza restaurant reportedly say she was asking for money from other customers when she entered, leading them to believe that she may be homeless.

Though no one was physically harmed, this incident could have become much worse and represents the kind of racist hatred that Black Americans have to prepare themselves for every time they step into a public area in the U.S. There were a total of 96 official complaints of hate crimes in New York City in just the first quarter of 2021, up by 12 from the first quarter of 2020, which does not include all the many, many incidents that are not reported to police.
