A new movie about the world’s favorite fake plumbers, Mario and Luigi, is planned, which UpRoxx reports was announced on Thursday at Nintendo’s Direct event. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself appeared to give the announcement, and soon after the cast list was posted to Twitter.

That’s where it set off an absolute firestorm because leading the whole enterprise is non-Italian Chris Pratt as Mario.

Pratt seems to be a Hollywood favorite, but on Twitter, he is the most hated Chris. Partly because of his connection to a homophobic church, partly because he divorced Anna Faris, partly because he just has a bad vibe. Who knows?

But it’s definitely true that not many people think of Mario and think “Chris Pratt.” In fact, the most popular alternate choice seems to be Danny DeVito, which is an extremely opposite casting direction. To be fair, the movie is animated, so we won’t be seeing his face much.
