In Texas, an anti-abortion law has made it essentially impossible for someone to legally acquire an abortion within a time frame where they could reasonably know they are pregnant. Additionally, civilians can now sue anyone they believe has aided a pregnant person in getting an abortion, even someone who just gave them a ride, like an Uber driver. The law is horrifying for Texas citizens, but also for people across the U.S. who are seeing the right to bodily autonomy under attack.

It’s not really anyone’s business why someone chooses to have an abortion and just not wanting to be a parent is enough of a reason. But Dr. Markowitz’s stories are affecting because they’re a reminder of the very personal decisions people should be making with their doctor, not their government.
“In response to the recent legislative action in my state of Texas: I’m not pro-murdering babies,” she begins.
“I’m pro-Juanita who found out at her 20 week anatomy scan that the infant she had been so excited to bring into this world had developed without life sustaining organs,” writes Markowitz. “I’m pro-Susan who was sexually assaulted on her way home from work, only to come to the horrific realization that her assailant planted his seed in her when she got a positive pregnancy test result a month later.”
She told stories about children who were assaulted and impregnated, of people trapped in poverty or trying to escape domestic abuse.

She mentions a woman who used IVF to become pregnant only to find she had six viable embryos that wouldn’t safely come to term.
“You can argue and say that I’m pro-choice all you want, but the truth is: I’m pro-life,” Markowitz concluded. “Their lives. Women’s lives. You don’t get to pick and choose which scenarios should be accepted. t’s not about which stories you don’t agree with. It’s about fighting for the women in the stories that you do agree with and the CHOICE that was made. Women’s rights are meant to protect ALL women, regardless of their situation!”

It’s actually not entirely clear if Markowitz is using hypotheticals in these stories or if they’re real women she encountered. They are, however, all experiences that anyone could potentially have, and they deserve all the support and help they can get.
