The verdict is still out on whether the whole of religion is a scam, but there’s little question that some religious leaders are constantly playing their congregations and making bank while they do so.

Some people are throwing evangelical minister Jesse Duplantis into that category (again) after he went on TV during a fundraiser and told people that the best way to get Jesus to hurry up the rapture is to donate more money.

“I honestly believe this, that the reason why Jesus hadn’t come is ‘cause people aren’t giving the way God told them to give,” he said. “When you understand, you can speed up the time.”

If Duplantis truly believed that, as he says, one would think he must be broke himself from all the giving, but of course, that’s simply not the case.

Not long after, he bragged about how rich he is, which is a strange way to ask regular people to give up their hard-earned money.

“I was on television, he said, ‘I heard you was a millionaire.’ I said, ‘That’s not right. That’s not true…multi. Now add that to it, you’ll be alright,’” he said.

Duplantis showed a little bit of self-awareness at that point, seeming to admit that he knows he’s too rich to “move people emotionally” to give, and appealed to them to listen to God instead — who, according to Duplantis, desperately wants their money.

“I really believe this — if people would call this number and put this victory all over the word, every available voice, every available outlet, the Father, he would say, ‘Jesus, go get ‘em.’” he said. “Because he wants to see us as much as we want to see him…what has hindered all these things is people are not doing, in the financial realm…what God’s called them to do.”

This is far from the first time Duplantis has been criticized over his wealth, or flaunted it in response, but it’s amazing how much you can get away with simply by saying it’s what God wants you to do.
