For every day, there seems to be a story about someone getting kicked off a flight for refusing to wear their mask. Or for having a violent reaction to being told to wear their mask. Or getting physically restrained for being belligerent. The friendly skies are no more as people try to get back to using airplanes for work and travel.

The latest? A Twitter user posted a video of a man getting violent with a flight attendant after it appears that the attendant asked him to put on a mask. The man looks like he hits the flight attendant and then tells him, “You gave me one co*k-sucking warning” and that he complied and pulled the mask over his nose. However, it’s unclear if that narrative is accurate from the footage.
As he is throwing a fit, a woman who appears to be his wife gets up and removes her mask. Then she proceeds to try and explain what happened, but the whole situation is so weird. As the man is escorted off the plane, the passengers erupt in cheers. They’re probably excited to get rid of a man who seems to definitely not prioritize others’ health or safety and who thinks he’s above the flight attendant who is trying to do his job in a really hostile environment.
Twitter was not having this man’s violent outburst, commenting on how flight attendants have an incredibly difficult job made even more so by people like this man. They also noted how the outburst was an example of white privilege in action.

One warning? Try 18 months of warnings, countless videos on social media, countless news articles, and probably several written and spoken recitations of the masking policy the moment he entered the airport.

Conflict on flights has gotten so prevalent that President Biden directly addressed the issue on Thursday. Speaking from the White House, he announced that fines would double for those who refused to comply with US federal transportation mask mandates: “If you break the rules, be prepared to pay. And by the way, show some respect. The anger you see on television toward flight attendants and others doing their job is wrong. It’s ugly.”

So next time you get on a plane, be nice to your flight crew and keep your damn mask on.
