Another person has been fired after being abusive toward a person of color both on and off camera, this time for telling a Black man to stay in his “hood” because she apparently confused his dog with another that had been barking loudly at some point (which still would not have justified racism).

Unfortunately for the white woman, the man was New York Times best-selling author and anti-racist activism leader Frederick Joseph, who was not about to put up with such treatment and began recording on his phone after she allegedly made the racist comment.

“At the dog park in Brooklyn with my fiancé and this white woman was threatening to call police and told us to ‘stay in our hood’ because she had our dog confused with another dog who had been barking loudly,” Joseph wrote. “So, I started recording and she tried to slap the phone out my hand.”
After Joseph accused the woman of telling him to stay in his “hood,” an appropriation of well-known AAVE slang, she tries to turn it around as though he said it to her, repeatedly asking “did you just say that to me” and putting her hand up to her mouth like she’s shocked at her own words. Not even God knows how she thought that was going to work.
Although Joseph did not get the comment or the threats to call police on camera, a bystander did confirm to him that she said the “hood” thing and, of course, he caught her trying to damage his personal property.
If she had just covered up her face and walk away, it’s possible that internet sleuths would not have been able to identify her as Emma Sarley, previously of virtual conference software company Bevy before they found out about her apparent racist comments. As it is, it took less than a day for Bevy CEO and co-founder Derek Andersen to announce on Twitter that she had been fired for violating company values.
“@BevyHQ has zero-tolerance for discriminatory behavior of any kind,” wrote Anderson. “Yesterday an employee engaged in behavior contrary to our values and has been terminated. We apologize deeply to all involved.”

Anderson and Joseph were able to have a discussion with each other on the alleged outburst by Sarley, and the anti-racist author published a follow-up video expressing that he hopes she can learn and reflect on herself now that she’s experienced some consequences for her actions.
“While it’s unfortunate that she had to lose her job, I do think that this brings up an important conversation about accountability, especially in a country where Black and brown people, marginalized people as a whole, have seen so little of it, oftentimes having to bear the burden of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc,” he said. “I think that it’s important that people know that there are consequences for their actions, and I don’t think that it’s up to victims to have to coddle people who are engaging in abuse.”
“I hope that Emma learns from this.”
Unfortunately, Joseph’s tweets are now being flooded with white supremacists and their enablers claiming that Sarley just had a bad night and doesn’t deserve to be fired for it, backing that up with their own racist comments, not to mention sexist and homophobic attacks.
Joseph has previously been accused of making too big of a deal out of things after he found an Airbnb establishment to be full of what he thought were Satanic items, which the hosts adamantly denied, and this possible case of overreaction has been used repeatedly by white supremacists to attack his credibility.

Others, however, have apparently had their own bad nights without saying something obviously racist to a Black person, trying to smack someone’s phone out of their hand, then attempting to act like the victim of the racist comment in one of the most blatant DARVO attempts we’ve ever seen.
