25 Responses To The Watering Down Of Biden’s Infrastructure And Budget Bills

Memes joking about progressive provisions being stripped from Biden's infrastructure and budget bills

The Biden administration is currently hard at work finalizing negotiations on two major bills — the Build Back Better (BBB) budget reconciliation bill and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework (BIF). The former bill addresses (or used to address) several campaign promises made by President Joe Biden during his 2020 run, including many sorely needed social programs to help families and not-rich people get by, while the latter addresses the nation’s crumbling infrastructure problem.

Unfortunately, obstruction by two Democratic senators, Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, has resulted in the systematic stripping of many key provisions from these bills, such as measures addressing climate change in the BIF and paid family leave, dental care, and free community college from BBB. This was done to appease Manchin and Sinema’s demands that the bills’ price tag be limited to their satisfaction while the Senate gives extra billions to the military budget.

Progressives are naturally unhappy to see everything they were promised be stripped out of these bills one at a time, leaving the kind of bare bones that the masses have been tossed year after year no matter how much power Democrats ever seem to hold. Many are reminded of the broken promise of $2000 checks at the peak of the pandemic, getting $600 short of what was promised on the flimsy premise that Trump had given them that money already with the last checks he sent out.

Though some remain optimistic about what remains in these bills, Twitter is full of disappointed leftists.
