Senator Josh Hawley, whose largest claim to fame is his role in organizing and instigating the January 6 assault on the Capitol, is going viral this Monday for saying into a microphone that men are consuming porn and video games because they’re insecure about their masculinity. Any armchair psychologist could have told Hawley that, but the way he said it makes it sound like the public discussing “manhood” (the concept, not the organ) and what it means to modern-day society is creating more demand for the games of video and people doing the sex on camera.

Somehow, he seemed to think that announcing this would make people criticize toxic masculinity less.

“Can we be surprised that after years of being told they are the problem ― that their manhood is the problem ― more and more men are withdrawing into the enclave of idleness, and pornography, and video games?” Hawley asks in a viral video.
Hawley’s lamentations about the state of manhood is another example of a conservative pretending he doesn’t know how adjectives work when it comes to the phrase “toxic masculinity.” Feminists, social scientists, and other observers of society have been discussing for decades how Western society has morphed the concept of masculinity into something toxic — based around violence and domination and unhealthy attitudes toward emotion.
A basic understanding of the English language leads one to understand that this means masculinity is not toxic by default. Examples of non-toxic, healthy masculinity are not limited to Idris Elba but might as well be, and can also be found in women and non-binary people, and has often been cited to include respectfulness, compassion, and being helpful to loved ones and strangers alike.
Unfortunately, men like Hawley depend on toxic masculinity in order to galvanize their fragile constituents, and so they continue to go to the National Conservatism conference and say things that get them roasted on Twitter by everyone else in the morning. Also, everyone now thinks that Hawley watches porn every time he feels insecure.
