Ryan Samsel was one of the many Trump fans who swarmed the Capitol on January 6th, and is now facing charges for allegedly attacking an officer. He supposedly shoved the woman to the ground, where she hit her head. She eventually blacked out and was taken to the hospital with a concussion. Vice reports that federal prosecutors allege this act was part of a history Samsel has of “choking and beating women to the point of loss of consciousness.”

Court documents show that Samesel’s record goes back to 2006, and is full of instances of domestic violence and assault. The 38-year-old from Bristol Pennsylvania was convicted in 2009 of assault and reckless endangerment after holding a woman captive for five hours, choked her until she passed out, beat her, and broke her teeth. In 2011, he beat up his pregnant girlfriend, attempting to drown her in a canal. She escaped and ran to an officer in a police vehicle.

He was also accused of choking and raping another woman some years later, and of breaking into her house multiple times, though she had a restraining order against him. Prosecutors are arguing that Samsel should not be released from jail as he awaits trial, but his representatives claim he was beaten by D.C. jail guards in March. According to the Washington Post, the attack is being investigated, and the beating supposedly aggravated a medical condition Samsel that has caused him to have seizures. Prosecutors are not impressed.
“Reviewing the police reports from these prior incidents reveals a pattern of Samsel not only threatening to kill others, but coming extremely close to actually doing so,” they wrote in court documents. “The courts have repeatedly failed the public and these victims when it comes to Samsel. No condition or combination of conditions that could ensure the safety of the community if he were to be released.”
