Deshawn Pressley spotted another man grab a purse from 87-year-old Pat Goins while she was shopping for groceries at her local Kroger earlier this month. He and several other people reportedly made a dash for the man, but security camera footage showed Pressley following the thief, later identified as 58-year-old Derek Vaughn, into the parking lot and tackling him to the ground.

“I chased him down,” Pressley said. “He got to his car and everything, but I grabbed him, held him to the floor, got him down. Did what I had to do until the police arrived.”
He also said that he just “did what I had to do as a citizen, and I’m glad I helped her because she’s a wonderful, lovely lady and I just love helping people.”
After footage of the incident went viral, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office brought both Pressley and Goins together and honored the former with the Citizen’s Award.
“You took and made what we call a citizen’s arrest, and you make us very, very proud,” Richard Jones told him in front of the cameras.
Meanwhile, Goins called him “my hero” for stopping Vaughn from getting away with her purse.
People on social media seemed to feel similarly.
