A self-described “Christian conservative” and former commissioner for Lehigh County in Pennsylvania was caught seemingly attempting to impersonate a gay Black man in order to defend Donald Trump. In a now-deleted but screengrabbed tweet, Dean Browning described himself as “a black gay guy” to claim that former President Barack Obama did nothing for him and that his life got better under Trump.

This was in response to a comment criticizing the current president for taking credit for Obama’s work after Browning claimed that “Biden will destroy in 4 months” everything that “Trump built in 4 years.”

“I’m a black gay gun and I can personally say that Obama did nothing for me, my life only changed a little bit and it was for the worse,” Browning wrote under his white profile photo. “Everything is so much better under Trump though. I feel respected – which I never do when democrats are involved.”
This slip-up from a blue checkmark and former county commissioner quickly caught a lot of attention from those Democrats, who dove into investigation mode to try and find Browning’s sock puppet account. Washington Post correspondent Philip Bump suggested that he found it under the name of “Dan Purdy,” a Twitter user with a Black avatar who comments quite often on things Browning has to say, often claiming to be gay.

Meanwhile, over on Browning’s main Twitter account, he has attempted to peddle an excuse for his claiming to be a gay Black man, but it feels a little weak.

“Regarding the tweet that is going viral from my account — I was quoting a message that I received earlier this week from a follower,” he claimed. “Sorry if context was not clear. Trump received record minority votes & record LGBTQ votes. Many people won’t say it vocally, but do in private.”

In response to all the suspicion, Dan Purdy made a video showing that he is real and saying that he is indeed Black and gay and claiming that he did send that exact message to Browning because that’s how he feels.

Twitter sleuths soon discovered that Dan Purdy is not Dean Browning, but that he might be a man named William Holte who lives in Philadelphia.

We may never know the truth for sure, but we can say with fair confidence that Dean Browning is bad at Twitter.
