A woman on TikTok has gone viral for her response to a tweet asking a fun but also depressing question: “What’s something that’s clearly a scam but Americans have been conditioned to believe it’s ‘normal’?” The TikTok user, known as “bree_ann_uhh,” had an entire list of answers and in making her video, managed to pretty much drag the entirety of America with pure truth.

She starts with “trickle-down economics,” which is self-explanatory for anyone familiar with what that actually means, and things get better from there.

“Everything’s decided by credit but in order to get credit you have to go into debt,” she says. “You pay monthly for insurance and it’s required by law but if you use it they can raise your rates or make you pay a deductible.”

Technically that second one is only true now if you want to drive anywhere or not live with the risk of being completely financially obliterated if you get sick. The Trump administration ended the penalty for not having health insurance, known as the individual mandate, in 2018 as part of the right-wing attacks on the Affordable Care Act.

Still, she makes a good point, and she has more.

“Being conditioned to believe that it’s impolite to share you salary with your coworkers when really it’s just something companies made up so they don’t have to explain why they pay some people more than others,” she continues. “You can die for your country at 18 but you can’t drink a beer.”

The initial video racked up over 3.3 million views on TikTok and almost 290,000 on Twitter. It was so popular that the next day, the user made a follow-up video listing yet more American scams. Then, the next day, she made part 3.

“The fact that the IRS knows exactly how much we owe in taxes but won’t just send us a bill, they make us actually file our own taxes which leaves room for human error and us to get in trouble.”

There are too many examples to list here, and yet commenters came up with even more. Others were simply grateful to the TikTok user for speaking the truth.

“Bro she kept going and I didn’t even have time to recover from the one before,” said one TikTok commenter.
