The best thing about Kirk Cameron is it’s very easy to forget he exists 99% of the time. The bad thing about Kirk Cameron is that when we as a society are collectively forced to remember, it’s generally because he’s doing something moronic and detrimental to others.

The actor-turned-devout-Christian has held two anti-mask protests in the form of Christmas caroling events in recent days. Both were held in Southern California, where COVID cases are at an all-time high, and ICU capacity is generally tapped out.

After the most recent event, during which he and his maskless carolers took over a mall parking lot in Thousand Oaks, Cameron jumped on over to Newsmax to complain about the backlash against him as well as the current lockdown restrictions in California.

Cameron said he consulted doctors prior to deciding to host these events, and decided the psychological harm being done from the lockdown is worse than the damage being done by COVID-19.
“There’s immunity in community,” he said, which, sure, rhymes, but doesn’t at all apply to the spread of a virus.
Cameron also insisted that “we shouldn’t be having a mask gestapo” and reminded viewers that COVID-19 has a 99% survival rate, pointedly ignoring the devastating impact it has on so many people who actually do survive.

This week, California became the first state to surpass 2 million COVID-19 cases. Many businesses have had to close up shop again, and people have been asked to stay home as much as possible and not gather in groups for the holidays as hospitals remain at capacity.
A surge in cases was expected following Thanksgiving, and another is expected following Christmas — thanks in no small part to people like Cameron, who think celebrating a holiday in large groups is more important than keeping people safe.
