Chaos is unfolding in Washington D.C. as furious Trump supporters and other right-wing protesters broke through the police line and stormed the Capitol building as congress worked on certifying the Electoral College votes.

As reports emerged that protesters had entered the building, voting on the objections to the count was stopped so that senators and others could be evacuated. At least one person has been reported to be shot.

The latest reports suggest that the break-in was quickly treated as an active shooter situation. The doors to the House chambers were blocked and those inside told to get under their desks because protesters made their way over.

One HuffPost reporter posted a photo of people blocking the chamber doors from the inside with a desk and Secret Service officers pointing guns at the door, saying that a shot had been fired into the room.

The senate chambers have also been locked down and a small group of protesters was photographed outside the doors with what looks like a couple of cops and a Confederate flag. Video of protesters walking upstairs inside the building with a Confederate flag has also spread with a message pointing out the bizarre irony.

Surreal video has also been captured of Trump supporters wandering into the building, milling slowly between the ropes set up for tours, possibly as shocked as the rest of us that they got inside. It’s almost like they didn’t have a plan for this.

It wasn’t long before protesters were wandering about the entire Capitol building as police stand around seeming like they don’t know what to do, and certainly not gassing and beating them like they do Black Lives Matter protesters every day. At one point, an individual even got up to the big official desk in one of the chamber to declare Trump’s imaginary victory.

In response, of course, Donald Trump has all but declared support for the protesters on Twitter, blaming Mike Pence for failing to do the thing he doesn’t have power to do. In reality, Pence hardly even had a chance to attempt anything as congress had only gotten to Arizona on the alphabetical list of states whose results they had to certify before things went absolutely nuts.

“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify,” he wrote. “USA demands the truth!”
