President Joe Biden followed through on his day-one promise to have the U.S. rejoin the Paris Agreement, which offers guidelines to nations to reduce their carbon emissions in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. Donald Trump withdrew the nation from the agreement in 2017, promising to renegotiate the terms to re-enter but never actually doing so.

Some Republicans, particularly those who were most supportive of Trump during his presidency, reacted badly to Biden’s move. Senator Ted Cruz in particular was put on blast for his rather bizarre response, which indicated that he thinks the Paris Agreement is somehow only about the people who live in Paris.

“By rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, President Biden indicates he’s more interested in the views of the citizens of Paris than in the jobs of the citizens of Pittsburgh,” he wrote. “This agreement will do little to affect the climate and will harm the livelihoods of Americans.”

The Paris Agreement, of course, is named as such because the treaty was negotiated and signed near the city of Paris, France, not because it only affects the citizens of that city. There are plenty of arguments to be made that the agreement doesn’t go far enough, but no reason to think that it will have less of an impact on the U.S. than on France.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may have had this in mind when quote tweeting Cruz, and also using the opportunity to remind everyone of who and what he was supporting on January 6.

“Nice tweet Sen. Cruz!” she wrote. “Quick question: do you also believe the Geneva Convention was about the views of the citizens of Geneva?”
“Asking for everyone who believes US Senators should be competent and not undermine our elections to incite insurrection against the United States.”
Youth climate activist Greta Thunberg’s response to Cruz was perhaps even better. She didn’t even bother to quote tweet Cruz, but clearly referenced him in a post congratulating the U.S. for reentering the “Pittsburg Agreement.”

The real question here is why Ted Cruz bothers to tweet anything with young women like these two ready to smack him with his own words every time.
