After finding that their savior had in fact not unleashed some super-secret master plan to overturn the 2020 election results and remain president, QAnon is coping by changing Trump’s inauguration date to March 4. In doing so, they’re giving off serious “Reasonablists” from the popular TV series Parks and Recreation energy.

Desperate to remain relevant now that Trump has slunk off to Mar-a-Lago, QAnon is reportedly merging with conspiracy theories even more wacky and potentially dangerous than their own.

According to Vice, they are beginning to echo the “sovereign citizen movement,” which claims that a law passed in 1871 secretly made the U.S. a corporation and therefore any law passed after that is invalid.

Those who believe in this often declare themselves sovereign citizens who are not part of the U.S. and therefore not subject to its legal system. This has not always turned out so well for them.

Due to the fact that Inauguration Day was moved from March 4 to January 20 by a federal law passed in 1933, QAnon believers are latching on to this other conspiracy theory out of “here’s how Trump can still win” desperation. That way, they can feel devastated and abandoned all over again five weeks and three days from now.

This theory has been outlined in a not-so-great TikTok video featured by the “Bad Legal Takes” Twitter account.

Since all presidents sworn in after 1871 are also invalid under this conspiracy theory, that would also make Trump the 19th president of the United States.

As amusing as it may be, QAnon merging with the sovereign citizen movement could foreshadow further violence by this alarmingly popular conspiracy group. People who have declared themselves “sovereign citizens” have lashed out with deadly violence against police officers and unfortunate bystanders, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. The “movement” is also mired in racism and antisemitism.

At least we can all look forward to another round of QAnon crying when Trump is inevitably not made president on March 4. Why can’t they just worship Zorp the Surveyor instead?
