Nearly a month after the Capitol riots that threatened the foundation of United States democracy, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is opening up about her frightening experience narrowly escaping from people who wanted her dead that day.

It’s obvious that AOC has been shaken up about her experience over the past weeks, suggesting on several occasions that the public simply didn’t know how close things were to being much worse.

During an Instagram live Monday night, AOC finally shared her story of the events of January 6th.

Ocasio-Cortez detailed hiding in a bathroom not long before the building was first breached, moments before someone she believed was a rioter got into her office.

“I just hear ‘Where is she? Where is she?’ And this was the moment where I thought everything was over,” she said. “I thought I was going to die.”

It turned out the person looking for her was a Capitol police officer, but AOC said the whole experience was a little shady.

“He was looking at me with a tremendous amount of anger and hostility. Things weren’t adding up. There was no partner there…He wasn’t yelling ‘This is Capitol police,’” she remembered, before adding that she later found out her staffer wasn’t sure if the man was “there to help us or to hurt us either.”

Ultimately, they wound up sheltering in Katie Porter’s office, with AOC borrowing clothes and shoes from another staffer just in case they had to make a quick getaway and blend in with the crowd.

Despite the fact that we know some of the rioters who breached the Capitol were looking to injure, kidnap, or even murder members of Congress who they believe to be their enemies—undoubtedly including AOC—some people are still being aggressively dismissive of the horrifying and traumatic recounting of events.

And Republican members of Congress have made it clear that they want to essentially just sweep everything under the rug and move on as if it never happened.

But AOC and others aren’t willing to let that happen, citing the need for accountability regarding the words and actions that led to the January 6 riot.

“We are not safe with people who hold positions of power who are willing to endanger the lives of others if they think it’ll score a political point,” she said.
