Donald Trump sent a petulant letter to the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) submitting his resignation from the union ahead of a vote on whether to expel him for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot. According to Trump, they can’t fire him because he quits.

“Ms. Carteris:,” the letter begins, addressing the union president. “I write to you today regarding the so-called Disciplinary Committee hearing aimed at revoking my union membership. Who cares!”

In classic Trump fashion, the Florida resident goes on to brag about his minor film cameos, and then, bizarrely, his supposed work helping the news media, claiming to have created jobs at networks he refers to as “MSDNC” and “Fake News CNN.” He also claims The Apprentice to be “one of the most successful shows in television history.”

Predictably, he starts this with a jab at Carteris, saying he’s “not familiar with your work.” Then come the accusations of attention-seeking and the flood of insults.

“Which brings me to your blatant attempt at free media attention to distract from your dismal record as a union,” he says. “Your organization has done little for its members, and nothing for me – besides collecting dues and promoting dangerous un-American policies and ideas – as evident by your massive unemployment rates and lawsuits from celebrated actors, who even recorded a video asking, ‘Why isn’t the union fighting for me?'”

He ends the letter announcing his “immediate resignation” from the union and signs off as “President Donald Trump.” The letter is stamped with his colorless ripoff of the presidential seal from his “Office of the Former President,” though he seems to have ditched the word “former” for this letter, at least.

According to journalist Kim Masters, the full response from SAG-AFTRA was two words: “Thank you.” It does save them some time, after all.

It didn’t take long after this resignation tantrum was posted online for the jokes to start.
