Alabama State Senator Tom Whatley, a Republican, was caught viewing explicit photos of a transgender woman just a week after voting in favor of an explicitly anti-trans bill. He was caught because he liked a tweet by an account titled “Bambi Hardcore TG 18+” that included a topless photo of the account’s owner, which was noticed by reporters with LGBTQ Nation.

Her Twitter bio currently identifies her as a “trans grrl princess,” and she routinely posts explicit photos and videos to promote her OnlyFans account.

It continues to be a mystery how the people with the most direct power over our laws in the nation continue to mess up on the simple social media rule of “don’t hit the ‘like’ button on things you don’t want people to know you’re looking at.”

Just a week ago, Whatley voted in favor of Alabama’s SB10 bill, which would require severe penalties for doctors who provided gender-affirming care to underage trans people. Doctors found guilty of giving trans kids puberty blockers, which delay the onset of irreversible physical changes that can result in gender dysphoria, could face up to 10 years in prison.

Though puberty blockers are prescribed to cisgender kids for a number of health reasons without Republicans freaking out, the bill claims this practice constitutes “dangerous and uncontrolled human medical experimentation.”

In reality, puberty blockers have been around for many years as tested and FDA-approved medications that can cause some side-effects, just like any medication but are generally considered to be safe. They have been more recently prescribed to trans kids to delay the onset of puberty until they are confident in their gender and have formed a plan for how to affirm this in a largely transphobic society.

Once they’re ready, they simply go off the medication and the puberty process can proceed as normal. Studies have found that providing trans people with this option significantly reduces the amount of suicidal ideation they experience as adults.

This is not the first time a politician has been caught liking explicit photos online, and this incident in particular seems to be an echo of homophobic Republicans getting caught having sex with other men. With the advent of screen-sharing technology, we also get incidents like when Fox News analyst Brit Hume was caught shopping for “sexy vixen vinyl” on his iPad.

Whatley has yet to comment on his telltale “like” of Bambi Hardcore’s tweet.
