A shocking story out of Spokane, Washington sounds like something from a Netflix exclusive film is spreading across international news as people wonder what could drive a real human being to do such a thing. But for real, a Spokane doctor allegedly tried to hire someone via the “dark web” using Bitcoin as payment to kidnap his estranged wife and force her back into his life.

Dr. Ronald Craig Ilg faces at least one charge of attempted kidnapping after the target was informed of the plot by an “unnamed international news organization” that was researching the dark web for their own purposes, according to The Spokesman-Review. The woman then tipped off the FBI. Ilg could face up to 20 years in prison for this federal crime if found guilty.

Photos of a sketchy website laying out the kidnapping plot in the job description reveal some rather disturbing details. The target, allegedly Ilg’s wife, was to be held for seven days and injected with heroin “at least two times per day,” with photos to be taken of her injecting the drug herself. She would then be released if she agreed to “cancel all court proceedings immediately” and “return to the chaos she left with her husband and the 3rd party she invited into the house,” as well as tell nobody about the kidnapping.

The kidnapper was further instructed to threaten the lives of the woman’s father, children, and dog in order to get her to comply.

“She should be told that her families health, including her father and her kids, depend on her completing these rules,” the job description reads. “It would be unfortunate if her older boy became addicted to heroin. Or her dad be severely beaten or her dog be slaughtered. Any and all persuasion should be used.”

Ilg’s troubles don’t end there, however. He is also accused of trying to use the same kind of website to hire someone to assault and injure a former employee who accused him of harassment, the consequences of which ended his medical practice as a neonatal physician — which is why his wife is referred to a “Victim 2.”
“The target should be given a significant beating that is obvious,” Ilg allegedly wrote. “It should injure both hands significantly or break the hands.”
All of this culminated in what appeared to be a suicide attempt by Ilg, who reportedly told FBI agents that the kidnapping plot was meant to somehow be a way to ensure that his assets were given to another woman aside from his estranged wife after he died. After being questioned by the FBI, Ilg was found in his home unconscious with a suicide note, but he survived after being rushed to the hospital.
According to the Daily Beast, this other woman, reportedly Ilg’s girlfriend, also reached out to the estranged wife to send her images of a text conversation she had with Ilg accusing him of the dark web plot, though he appears to deny it.
