Senator Ted Cruz has very little about himself that’s appealing, so he tries to keep his constituents’ approval by making them afraid of something else. It gives them less time to think about how much they dislike him. This week he’s going back to a popular GOP fear-mongering tactic and focusing on immigration along the border of Mexico.

On Friday, Cruz posted a series of videos of his adventures with 18 other GOP senators which include standing around in a bunch of reeds and discussing “human traffickers” heckling him from across the Rio Grande. Cruz was supposedly with a night patrol tasked with covering the river’s banks close to several U.S. migrant facilities.

“We have been listening to and seeing cartel members, human traffickers, right on the other side of the river, waving flashlights, yelling and taunting Americans — taunting the Border Patrol — because they know that under the current policy of the Biden administration, they can flood over here,” Cruz says.

“They’re getting paid four, five thousand dollars a person to smuggle them into this country. And … when they smuggle them in, the Biden administration releases them.”

Cruz and his cronies have been heavily focused on President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, even though they are fundamentally not very different from Donald Trump’s, unfortunately. Families are still being separated at the border and kept in detention centers similar to those that were heavily criticized under Trump’s administration.

Weirdly, though Cruz is accusing Biden of lax policy, he also posted that the scene at the border was a “humanitarian crisis” and a danger to public health, due to high tests for COVID-19.

To be clear, that last claim has not been verified by any actual data, just anecdotal stories from border sheriffs, according to WUSA9.

“It’s time for the Biden administration to put an end to it, and stop sanctioning lawless chaos on our southern border,” Cruz said.

On Twitter, Cruz is getting a lot of pushback from people who seem to think Cruz is LAARPing at the border:

That’s right. Cruz has been to Mexico pretty recently.
