Yesterday, The New York Times broke the news that Matt Gaetz has been under investigation by the Department of Justice for possible sex trafficking. Specifically, there are allegations that he paid for a 17-year-old girl to travel with him across state lines for the purpose of sex.

Gaetz has denied the allegations, insisting that they’re all wrapped up in an extortion scheme aimed at his family. However, he’s made things way more complicated for himself by claiming his father has been wearing a wire to prove to the FBI that the extortion is happening, and throwing out denials that there are photos of him with “child prostitutes”—something no one had publicly accused him of prior to his bringing it up.

Critics of the Florida Congressman aren’t surprised about the allegations, partly because Gaetz has a history of defending people accused of involvement in sex crimes, partly because he was the only person to vote against an anti-human trafficking bill in 2017, and partly because he’s just always come across as kind of creepy.
While there’s obviously nothing humorous about the idea of a grown man grooming and abusing a teenager, folks online have learned to deal with the constant hypocrisy of these high-level Republican politicians through dark humor, and this new Gaetz scandal is no exception to the rule.

So as we all await the results of the investigation — and wait to see if Gaetz will ever stop digging himself into a hole with his incessant comments on it all — Twitter’s busy dunking on him all the same.
