The whole “cancel culture” hysteria among the political right in the U.S. is really getting out of hand, with an increasing number of Republicans with massive platforms and audiences claiming to have been “canceled” and “silenced” any time they’re criticized. Not only that, they can’t seem to stop claiming that historical figures would have been “canceled” in modern America, including those who were very much canceled in ways significantly more concrete than a Twitter ratio.

This time, we’re going all the way back to ancient Greece thanks to Florida state representative and federal congressional candidate Anthony Sabatini, who claimed that the iconic philosopher Socrates would have been “canceled” in the U.S. today.

“If Socrates was out philosophizing in American society today, he would be cancelled real quick,” Sabatini wrote.
Socrates was famously executed in Athens after being convicted of the crimes of impiety, or “not believing in the gods of the state,” and corrupting the minds of the youth by questioning the accepted position of “might makes right” in Athenian society. He died after being forced to drink a concoction that contained hemlock, a poisonous herb.
Many commenters have compared Socrates’ actual fate to what is currently thought of as being “canceled,” pointing out that he was silenced in the most drastic and permanent manner by the state itself. It could even be considered quite a bit worse than having a lot of people make fun of you on Twitter, which is what is happening to Sabatini now.
