#ToadCruz Trends After Video Of Ted Cruz Eating A Fly Circulates

#ToadCruz has been trending on Twitter after a clip claiming to show one of the country’s least favorite senators accidentally swallowing a fly on air started trending.

A gif showing the unfortunate moment was posted to Twitter on Wednesday evening. In it, Cruz is giving some sort of interview on Fox News when a fly seems to buzz its way into his mouth, causing Cruz to scowl and dive for a glass of water.

It’s important to note up front—this didn’t actually happen.

The footage is from a 2019 interview between Cruz and Sean Hannity, and the fly appears to have been digitally added in after the fact. According to Newsweek, an altered version was first posted to Reddit a year later, and that seems to be what has resurfaced here.

But a good pun is a good pun, and regardless of the video’s legitimacy, the jokes that popped up from the idea of Cruz accidentally choking on a pest mid-sentence deserve their moment to shine.

And besides, the fact that it wasn’t at all hard to believe Cruz would react to a fly zooming into his mouth by choking it down rather than frantically spitting it out says all anyone needs to know.
