Texas has officially passed a law banning abortion once a “fetal heartbeat” can be detected, which means as early as six weeks after conception, and pro-choice advocates are outraged.

The law was passed by Governor Greg Abbott back in May, but has undergone contentious battles in the months since. Civil rights groups fought the ban tooth and nail, knowing full well that most women don’t even know they’re pregnant at six weeks along, making this a deeply effective ban on abortion. But they lost.

Forget Roe v. Wade, apparently. And forget Texans having a voice in the matter. The Supreme Court opted to shut up and just let Abbott ban women’s rights to their own bodies because it’s what he and his fellow Republicans in power want.

And in a particularly vicious twist, the law also allows for any private citizens to sue anyone who helps a woman get an abortion, in effect an abortion bounty, from doctors to people simply offering rides to the clinic.

Additionally upsetting to many is that this law went into effect on Wednesday, the same day that legislature in Texas also started allowing for anyone 21 and over to carry guns without a license. So women’s rights are being rolled back at the exact same time as more is being done to make people feel unsafe.

All of this is leaving people concerned about the future — not just for Texans, but for the entirety of the United States — and they’re taking to Twitter to express as much.
