Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that he tested positive for COVID-19. He was reported to be asymptomatic and generally in good health, but regardless is isolating and receiving aggressive treatments of antibody cocktails to make absolutely sure that he doesn’t die from the illness as over 630,000 Americans who didn’t have access to these treatments did.

Abbott’s critics wasted no time in criticizing the Republican governor for benefiting from expensive treatments that are typically reserved for those who are considered at high risk for developing severe COVID symptoms without any evidence that he fits into this category. Not only is Abbott fully vaccinated, he reportedly received a booster shot that the rest of us didn’t even know existed yet.

Abbott, who has attacked preventative measures that cost a whole lot less than advanced medical treatments, has been widely accused of hypocrisy for doing everything he can to protect his own life after making it illegal for schools to protect the lives of children. One Texas school is even trying to get around his mask mandate ban by adding masks to the dress code while parents of disabled children sue the state for failing to protect these highly vulnerable kids and denying their right to equal access to education.

Others are pointing out how Abbott’s antibody treatments highlight a stark divide between the rich and powerful and the rest of us in the U.S., with the governor receiving the best healthcare money can buy at no cost to him as the rest of us fear massive hospital bills should we contract COVID-19 or have any other health issue.
