Alex Jones, former fan of Donald Trump, recently suggested that maybe the former president is actually “a dumba–” after playing a clip of his latest rally in which he told the audience that vaccines work and suggested that they get the COVID-19 shot, eliciting boos from the typically fawning crowd. Trump made sure to cushion this suggestion by assuring his fans that they didn’t have to get it if they didn’t want to, but said that it works, and that “if it doesn’t work, you’ll be the first to know.”

It’s one of the more disturbing facts of life that many of us share the opinion with Trump that the COVID-19 vaccine is effective, but hardcore anti-vaxxers like Alex Jones are so deep into their anti-vaccine propaganda that it even overrules their worship of the Florida man.

“BS. Trump, that’s a lie, you’re not stupid,” Jones says after the clip ends. “Just two weeks ago they said it was 65%, then 40%, saw a number put out about Pfizer shots, 30-something percent. Because they just want to tell you it doesn’t work so you run and get the new damn shot.”
Jones sounds as though he is referring to seemingly conflicting reports on how effective the COVID-19 vaccine is on preventing infection, though we cannot find any studies that suggest rates as low as 40 or 30 percent. Variations in stated percentages of effectiveness often come from studies looking at different variants as well as different vaccines, with the delta variant becoming one of the most contagious viruses known to medical history and causing the most infections in vaccinated persons.
It also appears that the effectiveness of individual vaccines may be declining over time. There have been increasing reports of breakthrough cases and it does seem possible that full immunity to the virus will be more difficult than we had hoped, but the vaccine does protect well against severe infections, with 95 percent of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 being unvaccinated.
Should Donald Trump become a breakthrough case, he will almost certainly declare all versions of the vaccine to be zero percent effective, but otherwise Trump will always believe that what happens to him is the same thing happening to everybody. This is surely a shameful way to live, but Jones thinks the real shame here is that the former president has for once aligned himself with the overwhelming medical science opinion.
“Shame on you, Trump. Seriously,” said Jones. “Hey, if you don’t have the good sense to save yourself and your political career, that’s okay. At least you’re going to get some good Republicans elected, and we like you. But, my God, maybe you’re not that bright. Maybe Trump’s actually a dumba–.”

Trump may also be speaking in favor of the vaccine due to the fact that he was always determined to take full credit for it even as he was ejected from the White House before it became available to the public. However, the Florida man has not been shy in the past of doing a full 180 on any position when it becomes politically convenient for him.
