There have been quite a few absurd and nonsensical lines dropped by loud Evangelical Christian preachers on the topic of COVID-19 and mask-wearing after Republicans made it into a political war. From “God doesn’t want you to wear a mask because God made your face in his image” to telling people that they won’t be allowed in the church with masks because the government is possessed by demons, it’s like they’re competing for the title of Worst Thing Said About COVID-19.

Televangelist Jim Bakker recently got his entry in, saying in a press release that he will defy any mask mandates because, since they slightly muffle your voice, God won’t be able to hear your prayers through them. No, really.

“How can you go to church and pray when you’re wearing a mask?” he reportedly asked. “Do you think God can hear your prayers through a mask?”

It’s a little weird for people who believe in literal translations of the Bible and truly think that God is all-powerful, knowing everything already even if people don’t officially put their hands together and pray, yet think a mask will somehow put an end to that.

Of course, Bakker’s history should be an indication to anybody that he shouldn’t be believed on any topic. He was convicted on 24 counts of felony fraud in 1989, earning him a 45-year prison sentence. However, appeals reduced this sentence to just eight years, of which he served only six. All of this happened after it was discovered he paid hush money to a woman to cover up an alleged rape, forcing him to resign from his televangelist program.

These and other details have led to widespread mockery for Bakker over his recent statement on masks. Here is a selection of our favorite responses:
