September 11th remains a tough day for many Americans, but that rings especially true this year, as troops finally pull out of Afghanistan and we are confronted with the impact our monumental tragedy had overseas as well as on U.S. soil.

But while two of our former presidents joined President Joe Biden at the National September 11 Memorial, and George W. Bush gave his own televised speech marking the anniversary of our national tragedy, Donald Trump opted to skip any official ceremonies. Instead, he briefly visited a police station in New York, but his main focus was on something entirely unrelated — providing commentary for a pay-per-view boxing match.

That the most recent former president, who is still seen by far too many in the United States as a leader, would shove such an important date in modern American history to the side in favor of making some money on a fight was seen by many as just another sign that Trump still doesn’t have what it takes to be any sort of leader.

Including Captain America himself: Chris Evans.

Evans responded to a tweet from former Chief of Staff to the Vice President Bill Kristol, who said that he would be “happy if [Trump] stays far away from the solemn ceremonies memorializing the tragedy and bravery that day.”

“On the 20th anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history, a former president of the United States of America will be…..hosting a pay-per-view boxing match in Florida,” the actor scoffed. “Honestly, how, HOW do the people who support him square this?”

Evans was far from the only person to criticize Trump’s decision.

His niece, Mary L. Trump, who has been a vocal and scathing critic of the former president in recent years, told CNN that her uncle’s decision is “entirely in keeping in what Donald always does.”

“He doesn’t understand dignity. He doesn’t understand tragedy. He doesn’t understand anything that doesn’t pertain directly to him,” she said, while also noting that once again, GOP officials largely failed to say anything about what would have been seen as a deeply offensive choice for any other former president prior to Trump.

But folks on Twitter weren’t so silent.

And if you’re wondering how Trump’s commentary on the boxing event itself went, well, apparently about as one might expect.

Trump also allegedly used 9/11 to yet again tease the possibility of running for president in 2024, despite the overwhelming loss he faced last year.
