An independent school district in Texas got an unusual kind of statement from one of its board of trustees members during a board meeting on the record ahead of a vote on whether to restrict medical exemptions for mask-wearing among staff and students. The additional restrictions passed on a vote of 5-2, but not before trustee Danielle Weston seemed to admit to conspiring with her doctor to falsify a medical exemption for herself and her children.

Weston bizarrely got on her microphone and stated on the public record that when she received the email from the Round Rock school district, she interrupted her night out with her husband to contact the family doctor. Why she would do this to herself remains unclear.

“Sit down at the table at the restaurant and I texted our family doctor — known her for years. I said ‘tell you what, I need a medical exemption for myself and for my kids because it looks like my district’s going rogue. You work in a hospital, you know what I’m talking about,’” she said. “My medical exemptions are in my house already. The Westons are ready to go.”

This statement has pro-mask parents with kids in the school district as well as many others generally concerned for the safety of children accusing her and her doctor of falsifying medical records — a common problem among anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers alike. It also happens to be a criminal offense that could end up costing her doctor her medical license if what Weston claimed turns out to be true.

Weston’s claim that the school district “went rogue” refers to their insisting on a mask mandate within their schools in spite of Governor Abbott’s ban on such mandates, which is currently not being enforced due to multiple legal challenges to his order. Many districts within the state have been defying the ban either by simply ignoring it or, in some cases, adding masks to their dress code to get around it.

This defiance will likely save many lives as children’s return to school for the new year has already resulted in mass surges in COVID-19 cases among children and staff. The ultra-contagious delta variant is spreading like wildfire in states like Texas with low vaccination rates thanks to Republicans and other right-wingers spreading falsehoods and general refusal to mask up and socially distance.

Thanks to this propaganda, school board meetings like this one have become hotbeds of misinformation as well as angry threats from COVID-deniers, prompting a wave of school board resignations throughout the country. Many are now hoping that Weston will soon be among those resigning their posts, if she’s not arrested first.
