A group of far-right Republicans attempted to enter a jail holding multiple accused Capitol insurrectionists as they await their trials and were accused of trespassing and obstruction by a security employee as they were denied access because it turns out detention facilities have security protocols. The stunt put on by everyone’s favorite members of congress — Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, and Louie Gohmert — was caught on video as they complained about not being allowed to go wherever they want despite their political power.

In one video clip, Gohmert sounds like he is threatening the facility employee by bringing up that they vote on how much funding to give detention centers like this one, but she does not appear to be impressed, even when Greene asks to speak to the manager.

“Can you please go ask your supervisor?” says Greene. “You right now are obstructing entrance into this facility,” says the woman, ignoring Greene. “This is the way people enter. You are obstructing our entrance.”

The Republicans agreed to leave while still complaining about being accused of trespassing and went outside to hold a press conference to complain that this thing happening in capitalist America is communism, somehow.

“The supervisor came down, was standing right here, and turned her back on me. The other one says she won’t talk anymore, that we are trespassers, she’s not saying any more than that,” said Gohmert. “We have turned a corner. We’re in totalitarian, Marxist territory here. This is the way third-world people get treated.”

In reality, this is the way regular people get treated all the time by staff at detention centers. Democrats and non-approved media were turned away from migrant detention centers during the Trump years, which Republicans didn’t seem to have an issue with at the time.

Jails and prisons are allowed to turn people away for any reason they decide is a threat to security and it’s been that way for a very long time. It just hasn’t personally affected these three politicians until now.

Karl Marx himself did not outline any specific policies on detention center security, but to Republicans, “Marxism” is just a placeholder for anything they don’t like.

On the bright side, it’s always fun to watch wealthy Republican politicians who assumed they could do whatever they wanted while in office discover things that the people they would call Marxists have been complaining about for decades, including the practice of holding people in jail before they’ve been found guilty of a crime. Not to mention the horrific conditions that prisoners, convicted or not, endure in those facilities that were at some point supposed to be for rehabilitation, maybe?

The woman in the background in the second video holds up the sign saying “WHERE IS DUE PROCESS” would probably defend this practice when it comes to the people who are most affected by it, including people of color deemed dangerous for their skin tone and those too poor to pay bail.

Welcome to America, comrades.
