Every Halloween, warnings about the horrible things dangerous people will pass out to children start to circulate. And parents shriek in terror and triple-check the candy and say their thanks to some higher being that their children have avoided these awful child-hating criminals yet again, though surely they must be out there.

Years ago, it was rumors of razor blades in anything from apples to KitKat bars, but in recent years, this has mostly consisted of people insisting that folks are really out there lacing candy with THC.

And every year, Twitter pushes back against the absurdity of this story presented as fact and seemingly used to ever-so-subtly shove us back into the era of Reefer Madness, where marijuana — now legal for recreation in 18 states and decriminalized in another 13 — is the enemy and all those who use it out to destroy the children.
Of course, this doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Even the picture used in the “news story” gives everything away. The tweet, from 6abc Philadelphia reporter Jaclyn Lee, claims that the photos are of real “confiscated” snacks that just happen to “look a lot like the real thing” but are actually “laced with THC.” But these are literally carefully packaged edibles with clear labels on the front — not intended to fool anyone.
So the time has come, once again, for Twitter to do its thing and dunk on people peddling this nonsense story with one overall broad reminder — stoners are not going to waste their pricey edibles on random children who come knocking on their door.
