A server in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday shared with a friend that he had received a homophobic note from his customer instead of a tip. His friend is a man named Eric Salzwedel, the co-founder of the Do Good Wisconsin Facebook page, which worked out great because Salzwedel shared his friend’s story with the group.

On the server’s check, the customer had crossed out the tip section and written, “Service was good, but we don’t give to sinful homosexuals.”
The Do Good page does good, often through something called the Venmo Challenge. He’ll post a story about servers who have had a rough time in the Madison area and ask followers to contribute towards helping the story’s protagonist. He shared the horrible, homophobic note and asked people to jump in to give this server a great surprise.

“I plan to go back into the restaurant, request this server and show them that this community and so many others do LOVE them with the biggest tip they have ever received! BUT I NEED YOUR HELP!”
He shared the outcome with his followers as well, including a photo of a new check. On this one, instead of homophobia, the server got money: four thousand five hundred dollars.
It took only 36 hours for 250 people to donate the money they needed to give this gift to the server.
“To the folks who felt it was necessary to write this hateful note and not tip…don’t worry me and about 250 others will cover the tip for you,” he wrote.
His friend has asked to remain anonymous, but he said he was “surprised from the tip and extremely grateful.”
“We know unfortunately this [money] won’t change some people’s behaviors, but hopefully it will show the amount of [love] there is for this server,” Salzwedel said. It is always nice to see that there are 250 nice people to undo the harm of one awful one.
