Tenant Shares Video Of Spotless Apartment As Landlord Allegedly Demanded Cleaning Fees

A tenant’s video showing her landlord try to claim the apartment is dirty on their exit walkthrough has people furious with landlords all over again.

@voteforhani shared the short clip alongside the caption “I hate landlords. Please watch as mind pretends our absolutely spotless flat is filthy.”

The video itself features the landlord asking Hani to zoom in and take pictures of “dirty things,” pointing to a flawless sink and counter. She then tries to point to the cabinets and say that all the surfaces “ need to be clean,” even as the light is reflecting off of them they’re so utterly spotless.

Hani followed up with a video of the bedroom and bathroom, which also appear to be move-in ready, and a claim that the landlord is actually trying to deduct cleaning fees from their deposit.

No one watching the videos was remotely surprised that a landlord would try to charge unnecessary fees for cleaning the tenants already did themselves, and did well. 

Landlords trumping up charges so they don’t have to give deposit money back seems like something far too many renters encounter, and something landlords get away with too often.

She’s gonna try to skin you for £300+ and will likely spend nothing/maybe £50 cleaning it.

Do not let them take a penny off your deposit.

The above agent took £160 to “clean the garden”, but a few months later when we were walking past – the garden was exactly how we’d left it.

2/2 ripped out and dumped in the living room and garden. Letting agent said “There’s no evidence here that you’ve cleaned it”. I nearly launched her into the now discarded bath. Landlords/letting agents are the dregs of humanity

It’s unclear whether Hani and her landlord have reached any sort of conclusion to this situation yet, but the very exciting thing about renting is once you get free of one corrupt landlord trying to nickel and dime tenants already stretched thin, you’re quite likely to wind up going to another one who will do exactly the same thing.
