Another school board meeting has gone viral after a HAZMAT suit-wearing father insisted children shouldn’t be wearing masks lest “Hitler wins.”

Scott Brady, identified on Twitter as a painter, went all out for a school board meeting in Springfield, Pennsylvania, at the end of August. When it came time for public comment, he marched up to the podium, fully clad in the HAZMAT suit, and argued against mask mandates for school children.

“They don’t do nothing,” he said, to applause from those gathered.

Brady then went on to claim there was an outbreak of a virus from a monkey in 1985 where people wore HAZMAT suits, and then cited the film E.T. as an additional example where HAZMAT suits were the only way to safely avoid getting infected from something.

Moving slightly back into the realm of reality, he later offered up a single anecdote in which he claims a child with COVID spent three days at his house and nobody else caught the virus. His takeaway? “It’s not a super-spreader.”

Other singular anecdotes where people caught the virus from minimal contact would disagree, as, of course, would science itself. The Delta variant is at least two times as infectious as the initial round of COVID-19, which was already estimated to have an infection rate between two and six. In other words, for everyone one person that got COVID, they would likely spread it to another two to six people.

But Brady had other concerns on his mind, such as wondering how his daughter would learn Spanish without being able to look at her teacher’s mouth during class. While wearing masks in a learning environment isn’t ideal, logical people would argue that stopping a deadly pandemic is slightly more important than a sixth-grader learning basic Spanish.

As if he hadn’t already said enough, Brady wrapped up his speech by insisting we have to “become neighbors again” — which, to him, seems to mean that people who are taking safety precautions need to stop doing that and bow to the will of the unmasked.

“This is what Hitler wants. Hitler wants everybody divided,” he said. “That’s the problem. All divided. So if we all stay divided, who wins? Hitler wins, okay?”

At this point, all the anti-masker speeches happening at school boards are so ludicrous and outside of any rational thinking or debate that it’s hard to tell if they’re real or a mockery of anti-maskers. Citing Spielberg movies? Invoking Hitler? Is this real life?

But taking Brady’s words at face value…we’re all just tired. So tired.

That having been said, if anti-maskers do want to traipse around town in HAZMAT suits for a few weeks to prove some sort of untenable point, I don’t think anyone would stop them. And maybe we’d actually start to get out of this pandemic.
