Losing one’s phone at the club is not at all an uncommon experience, and thankfully tech companies have created a solution in the form of tracking apps that can help you relocate a misplaced device, or in some cases, recover a stolen one.

This widely available technology is still apparently unknown to some, including a woman in a viral TikTok video who seemed to be rather surprised when someone’s missing phone started ringing in her purse and was approached by a group of people looking for it.

Abby Wood and her friends used a phone tracker after her device went missing during their night out and followed it to a diner. The video starts as one of them calls the phone to try and find it among the several people waiting at the front of the restaurant for seating.

“What are you looking for?” someone asks, only to be shushed by two of the young ladies in the group, one of them who appears to be Wood.

Then, suddenly, a confession.

“It’s in my purse,” says one of the women waiting for a diner seat, pointing to a bag her friend is for some reason wearing. As Wood and friends go to look through her purse, someone can be heard repeating “it came from the club.”

Soon, Wood is pulling her phone out of this strange woman’s purse with an expression that says it all.

“Weird!” exclaims the woman with the purse.

“You stole it!” one of Wood’s friends accuses.

The phone hunters largely seem more amused at the situation than angry, though they would have a right to their anger. It is possible that the phone could have ended up in the woman’s purse by accident, perhaps being mistaken for the diner woman’s own phone, but Wood and the majority of commenters seem to feel that this was a case of theft.

Regardless, Wood says in the video description that she did not press charges and would therefore like TikTok to stop taking her video down. She also noted in a reply to a comment suggesting maybe it was all a mistake by saying that the phone was stolen right off of her group’s table, so it’s hard to imagine how that was an accident.

“Lmao she took it from my table in the club… meaning she walked into a section and grabbed it and ran,” she wrote. She also told another commenter that she had repeatedly called her phone before tracking it down, and presumably nobody answered, which doesn’t look good if the ringer was audible in a crowded diner.

Though the video ends before we can see how the woman tried to explain herself, Wood says she remained calm throughout the whole interaction and seems to simply be relieved to have her phone back, preferring to let it go and frame it as an amusing story. It certainly caught on with TikTok users, who have granted the video over 1.5 million views even though it was apparently repeatedly removed by the platform.

“Somehow, magically it ended in my purse,” joked one commenter. “What kind of wizardry is this.”

“Oh that silly old thing?” wrote another. “It’s just in her purse. No big deal.”
