An old video showing a police car chasing a man on foot at an unnervingly close distance and ultimately smashing into a parked car is going viral again as people continue to question how, exactly, police are actually helping make society any better.

@Imposter_Edits posted the video on Saturday, incorrectly attributing to the case to a “shoplifting charge.”
“Really tried to run him over… sacrificed someone else’s car, over a shoplifting charge?” he asked.

The video itself shows one police car driving really close circles around a man running through a large parking lot. Another officer pursues on foot, and a second police car comes up behind the man and starts chasing him down.
Despite the fact that the parking lot is almost entirely empty, the second cop car soon slams directly into one of the few parked cars in sight, the officer driving apparently too intent on staying directly on the heels of the suspect to think ahead more than half a second.
With this sort of intense chase, causing unnecessary property damage and putting a man’s life at risk, one would anticipate that the suspect was a danger to the community.
But in actuality, officers in Albany, Georgia, were responding to a hit and run call back in July of 2018. Three suspects reportedly abandoned their vehicle and fled from police on foot, resulting in the absurd chase sequence that went viral
And the official police report told a somewhat skewed version of what was captured on video, claiming that “one of the assisting officers drove into the area and [the suspect] ran into the path of his vehicle, the officer jammed his brakes to avoid hitting [the suspect] but his car slid into the passenger’s side” of the parked car.
Meanwhile, the video very clearly shows that the police car initially swerved towards the suspect, which left it also heading towards the parked car. It swerves back in the other direction at the very last second, causing it to hit the rear of the car rather than T-boning it right in the center.
Regardless of the circumstances, the recirculating video angered people online, many of whom felt that so much of what happened was out of line.

Although the Albany Police Department made a show of putting Officer Matthew Brown, the cop who smashed into the other vehicle, on leave pending an investigation after the video went viral back in 2018, he ultimately faced no actual consequences and returned to active duty in a matter of days.
The city attorney reported that there was no dash cam video available of the incident.
